DFNYC is proud to join with the National Action Network and other progressive groups around the city in a march to protest police brutality and demand justice for the family of Eric Garner.  As citizens of this city, we cannot and will not stand by while a culture of fear is growing around us.   Eric Garner is not deceased today because he was selling loose cigarettes on a street corner.  He is deceased because he was a 300lb black man and the police were afraid of him and used extreme tactics, and he was afraid of them as well.  We must have greater tolerance, compassion and understanding among all our citizens.  We cannot allow the NYPD to be afraid of young people of color and single them out for extreme measures, and we cannot allow these young people to be afraid of the NYPD.

On Saturday, August 23rd we will be meeting in Staten Island, down the street from the ferry at St George's terminal, to march to the offices of the Staten Island District Attorney and then to the site where Garner died.  Buses will be leaving from Brooklyn and New Jersey at 9 a.m., and the rest of us will be taking the ferry.

Please join us.  We must promote better understanding among citizens and the police not just in NYC but in the country as a whole.
