At Washington Square Park, supporters will rally for freedom for everyone—including our gay and lesbian family members, friends, co-workers, and neighbors. These t wo cases – which concern the discriminatory Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) and California’s Proposition 8 – are fundamentally about whether gay and le sbian Americans can enjoy the same freedoms and opportunities as everyone e lse.\n\n\n \n\n\nThe so-called federal "Defense of Marriage Act" (DOMA) unf airly denies federal protections—like Social Security, veterans’ benefits, health insurance and retirement savings—to committed same-sex couples who a re legally married in their own states. Proposition 8 was found unconstitut ional by the Federal District Court and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals because it violates our nation’s fundamental concepts of liberty and equal treatment under the law.\n\n\n \n\n\nA bipartisan majority of Americans sup port marriage equality – 75 percent of voters say the freedom to marry the person you love is a Constitutional right entitled to all Americans.
