This seat is currently empty as former Assemblyman Rafael Espinal left to run for the city council in 2013. Erik Dilan, who formerly employed Rafael Espinal as his chief of staff, is now running for this vacant assembly seat, and faces reform-minded challengers.

More background:  In 2012, there was a special election for this Assembly district, and the Democratic party nominated Rafael Espinal. Democracy for NYC and other progressive groups, including the WFP, supported Jesus Gonzalez, a reform Democrat, who ran on the WFP line. Espinal won the 2012 special election, and left the seat a year later to run for the city council seat.  The previous council member, Erik Dilan, was term limited out in 2013; Espinal had previously been Dilan's chief of staff.
